THE TESLA COLLECTION
This is my 2nd lighting collection and what better person to name it after than my all-time hero Nikola Tesla! I have always been fascinated by Tesla, his extraordinary life and the plethora of items we use daily that he was responsible for inventing and discovering. He truly was 100 years ahead of his time!
Nikola Tesla was a Serbian-American inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, and futurist best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system. One of his most famous inventions also bears his name, the Tesla coil.
A Tesla coil is an electrical resonant transformer circuit designed in 1891. It is used to produce high-voltage, low-current, high frequency alternating-current electricity. Tesla experimented with several different configurations consisting of two, or sometimes three, coupled resonant electric circuits.
I was working on this new collection earlier this year and was struggling for direction on it and then I was approached by an amazing Astrophysicist called Mark Langtry who works with the only large-scale Tesla Coil currently in Ireland. He invited me down to have a look at it and to say my mind was blown was an understatement! From that day and witnessing the incredible arcs of lightning and beautiful musical tones the coil produced the collection was born.
I tried to bend and shape the copper pipes to reflect an arc coming from the coil and in such a way that each lamp complemented the next in the collection. Each lamp is paired with a beautiful LED filament bulb and incorporates a dimmer switch. One of the most fascinating things that we learned was that the LED light bulbs would light up briefly by just being around the coil. No wires attached. This was mind-blowing a per the amazing video below thanks to Lore films.
In another nod to Tesla who was fascinated with the numbers 3, 6 and 9 and once said “If you only knew the magnificence of the 3, 6, and 9, then you would have a key to the universe” the whole collection is named after a number in the Fibonacci sequence starting with 3!
I hope you like it as much as I did in making it!
